What is IPO Lot Size?
In an IPO, investors cannot apply for any random number of shares. They must apply in fixed multiples called lots. A lot is the minimum number of shares an investor must apply for.
For example, if an IPO has a lot size of 46 shares and price band of ₹304-₹321, the minimum investment is 46 × ₹321 = ₹14,766.
Retail investors can apply for a maximum of 13-14 lots (up to ₹2 lakh investment). Beyond ₹2 lakh, the application falls under the NII (HNI) category.
Why Does Lot Size Matter?
Lot size determines how much money an investor needs to participate in an IPO. SME IPOs typically have larger lot sizes requiring ₹1-2 lakh minimum investment, while mainboard IPOs are usually around ₹14,000-₹15,000 minimum investment.
Allotment and Lot Size
In an oversubscribed IPO, retail investors can receive a maximum of 1 lot through the lottery system, regardless of how many lots they applied for. This is why applying for just 1 lot is the recommended strategy for retail investors.
